Disney is revving up its engine for DreamWorks' "Need For Speed," dating the feature adaptation of the Electronic Arts racing game for Feb. 7, 2014.
"Need For Speed" will be based on the popular vidgame series, as a potential franchise kickstarter in the same vein as "The Fast and the Furious." Scott Waugh ("Act of Valor") is attached to direct, from a story developed by siblings George and John Gatins, with the former brother handling sole screenwritng duties.
The project, which John Gatins and Mark Sourian will produce, is on the fast-track at DreamWorks. Pic is slatted to start production early 2013.
Some February releases have done well recently at the box office: This year, Universal's adult actioner "Safe House" reached $126.2 million domestically, followed by Sony's weeper "The Vow," with $125 million -- the sixth- and seventh-highest grossing February bows ever.
In its date, "Need For Speed" will go up against Sony Animation's "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs" sequel, with Warner Bros.' live action-animated hybrid "Lego" slatted to bow on Feb. 28.
